right now it’s almost halfway through 2023, and 2024 is an election year in the US. I have started to see a growing proliferation of posts suggesting that there is no difference between the republican and democratic parties–the exact same kind of posts I saw an awful lot of before the last major election here. I am unfollowing folks who post or reblog these sort of posts, as I consider these posts to be fascist propaganda framed as leftist discourse, designed to suppress anti-fascist votes and voters.

Prepare yourself to vote for Biden now, because the only other option is someone who will make 2016-2020 look like a picnic.

You work with what you’ve got, not what you wish you had.

I detest Biden more with every passing day (and he was not in my top 10 candidates in 2020). 2024 will be an election between:

  • Biden/The Former Guy
  • Biden/DeSantis
  • Biden/Republican Fascist to be Named Later

No Labels is an op. It’s being funded by unknown parties to defeat Biden and the Democrats. Their election scenarios are fantasy football for political junkies.

No Third Party has a road anywhere outside statewide offices (Bernie is the exception that proves the rule, and he’s a Democrat for all intents and purposes).

Arguably the rosiest scenario is that TFG breaks with the Republicans to form his own party and tanks any chance the Republicans have, but that’s not looking as likely as it did two years ago.

If you’re pissed, get involved in your local elections. Ensure that no position is running unopposed (and that includes if you’ve got a conserva-Dem somewhere now–primary them).

Get the House back in the Democratic hands (unless you’re up for two more years of this only with MTG as Speaker this time). Increase the margin in the Senate (and send Selema to her post-senate career). Make sure your school board isn’t full of flat-earthers. Wake sure your county counsel isn’t going to shut down your libraries if they have a book someone doesn’t like.

As Stonekettle says, if you want a better country, but a better citizen.

There’s a reason we call it a civic DUTY, not a civic privilege.

Starting mid-April I’ll be posting to-do lists and action items for people who’ve never gotten involved before. One party wants you dead. FIGHT.

Speaking as a Michigan resident:  Look at the laws being passed in Michigan.  Now look at the laws being passed in Florida.  Spot the difference?  That’s because Michigan is being governed by the Democratic Party, and Florida is being governed by the Republican Party.  That’s the difference.  They’re different parties.  It is not the same.

You want what we’ve got?  Vote for it.

(And you want Michigan to stay the way it is and not slide backwards into the shit we had to deal with with Rick Snyder, or even just the way it was when the House and Senate were Republican-controlled?  Keep fucking voting.)

weaselle

look the main thing is that our first-past-the-poll voting style automatically and always devolves into a two party system where the majority of people dislike both parties. This is now a known phenomenon, a feature of our voting method as inevitable as water running downhill.

But that isn’t going to change until we get some sweeping voting reform that revises our voting system into some kind of ranked or run-off voting

Meanwhile one of our destined-to-be-disliked parties is actually trying to do things we want (health care, living wages, social services, public transportation, civil rights, education, support for gay and trans people, religious tolerance, etc) and one of our parties is banning books and undoing women’s rights and supporting corrupt racist police and endangering gay and trans lives while paying people to make posts about how both parties are equally bad so that people don’t vote democrat.

Like, we are going to not like a lot of how the Democrats operate, that is a feature of the current design, but they are trying to protect women’s rights, they are trying to help the homeless, they are trying to raise minimum wage they have agendas that include important things. And republicans? are at this point a literal cult that want to create a religious fascist state.

Even my father, now 80 years old, a man whose politics i have often despised, a man who voted for Reagan for fucks sake! even he (unhappily) votes Democrat now, because he’s not an insane person, and the republican party has become SO BLATANTLY EVIL AND STUPID that he can’t ignore it.

Democrats pass legislation we want that republicans then find ways to block. Democrats have passed bills that:

close gender pay gaps
raise federal minimum wage
make becoming a US citizen easier for immigrants
protect civil/public water sources from pollution
cut greenhouse gas emissions to fight climate change
increase gun regulation
lower and control prescription drug prices
improve healthcare access for those with pre-existing conditions
protect net neutrality
protect gay marriage rights

these are all the subjects of specific real bills that democrats have either passed into law or tried hard to pass in the last few years.

Meanwhile republicans act to block these bills while championing book bans and attacking trans folk and giving more power to corporations to ruin our planet and taking away women’s rights.

when you see posts attacking Democrats from the left or whatever, the talking points and quotes can often be traced back to right wing sources

So all posts trying to keep non-republicans arguing amongst ourselves and calling for us to not vote democrat (or not vote at all) ? I will be assuming they are bad-faith posts and i won’t be spreading them or engaging with them or anything.

Honest critique of the party is necessary, but like it or not our system currently is a two party system, and i’ll be voting for the better of the two until we can change our voting style to make additional political parties viable.

elljayvee

I live in Pennsylvania.

Neither of my children is cisgender.

The last gubernatorial election was, literally, do we elect this guy who is overly fond of cops but is generally a normal human being, or do we elect this other guy who believes frightening conspiracy theories and wants my children removed from my care and forcibly detransitioned and honestly would prefer them to be dead?

That’s it. That’s the kind of choice we get in first-past-the-post voting. If that second guy won, we needed to move. There was no safe way to stay here. The votes of my fellow citizens were all that was standing between my kids and serious fucking danger.

And my fellow citizens DID turn out. Lots of them came out and voted to reject the scary death cultist. I am grateful to all those who went, ugh, I don’t really like this guy, but the other guy is worse, and hauled themselves down to the polling place to get it done.

You, too, can vote to reject scary death cultists, in your hometown and your home state and in the country as a whole.

findingfeather

Getting rid of the scary death cultists is a prequisite for getting political representation you actually want.

Having some thoughts about like, how "women" playing with masculinity is only acceptable insofar as straight (cis) men find it sexually appealing and how the idea that transmascs (and butches) reaffirm patriarchy (by being "women" who emulate masculinity) is borne like, entirely out of people not talking to any genuinely masc women or non-passing trans men.

like legit, if you think masculine women aren't seen as a threat to the patriarchy, then you've got your head so far up your own ass that you've come back up the throat again.

spacelazarwolf

every time ppl insist that masculine women are taken more seriously, i tell them about when i stopped wearing makeup, cut my hair short, and started wearing more masculine clothing and how that change caused an abrupt shift in the way people at my old office treated me. the women went from being open and friendly with me to being very standoffish. the men went from treating me like a silly woman to treating me like a freak. people no longer wanted to stop by my office and talk to me. they didn’t want to eat lunch with me. they stopped giving me the benefit of the doubt if i made a mistake. they stopped smiling at me. and then the office found out i was trans while i was off work recovering from top surgery, they passed around social media posts and when i got back and people saw my flat chest they looked at me with such utter disgust. they treated me so poorly that i was forced to quit within a week of getting back.

so when ppl insist that anyone performing masculinity is automatically treated with more respect, it just feels. weird.

Anyways obviously the only correct way to have Deadpool in the spiderverse is if there's just one Deadpool. And he keeps ending up in different universes causing shenanigans but it's always the same Deadpool. He switches art styles/appearance depending on universe. The go-home machine can't figure out if he even has a home universe. (Believe me Miguel has tried.) He hits on most age-appropriate spideys and then hits on their MJs too. Villains in most universes seem to inexplicably know him, or at least know of him. He keeps getting kicked out of HQ. He's 100% aware that all this logic only works because it's an epic crossover and the writers wanted it that way.

ive noticed some backlash against stuff like "it's okay if you can't brush your teeth/shower regularly/eat healthy" in the vein of "actually it's unhealthy and youre promoting bad things!!! fucking brush/shower/drink water!!!!!!" and im not. a fan.

genderkoolaid

i think it comes down to the assumption that executive dysfunction is fundamentally an issue of ignorance or laziness or not taking something seriously enough or not being motivated enough. personally I have constantly been reminded in graphic detail by the abled people in my life of the negative effects of my executive dysfunction. I am not ignorant, it's not that I don't understand how serious self care can be. I have been reminded CONSTANTLY from others & from my body & from myself because it scares me.

Like. look at me. I have literally, multiple times, though to myself "maybe I should just stop eating entirely" because I have been so extremely ashamed of my inability to eat "normally" and "healthy." personally I find water tasty but if someone literally cannot bring themselves to drink water then I hope they drink whatever they can NO EXCEPTIONS! again there's this assumption that if you just scare people enough that they'll suddenly start Trying Hard Enough & that's just. not how it works for a lot of folks.

@msmc101 okay so. i'm going to say this as nice as possible: i don't think you understand what i'm talking about & this is exactly what i mean when i talk about this kind of ableism.

you are assuming that i, and other people who struggle with bathing, are making a decision out of ignorance or lack of understanding. you "understand skipping a day or two" but "skipping" implies a greater deal of control than most of us experience.

you mean well & i appreciate that, but i am not under any illusions that bathing is unnecessary. this is not a helpful comment at all. i do not need you to explain why bathing is important.

above, i mentioned my abled family's reaction to me not brushing my teeth. my mother has only ever meant to help me, but her telling me that not brushing my teeth would result in horrific terrifying illnesses did absolutely nothing to help me. it only made me hate myself for not being able to take care of myself, and gave me terrible panic attacks.

because i know, okay? i know. we know. this is not the result of ignorance.

it sounds like you have not experienced the experience of being literally unable to make yourself bathe for days, weeks, months of end, only being able to wear deodorant or use a wet towel, and having to listen to people like you be the butt of every internet joke about lazy abusive assholes who "can't bother to shower" and having people, similar to you but far less well-meaning, who also "understand skipping a day or two" but think anyone who is a little bit more disabled than that is disgusting and making a gross choice that we deserve to be shamed for.

telling me or anyone else who struggles with bathing "its really important to stay clean" is like telling someone who is stuck in a 100ft whole "its really important for you to not be in a hole." i know. and i probably know a whole lot better than you how much it sucks to be in the hole. i know a whole lot more about the hole, why the hole sucks, how hard it is to get out of the whole, and i have spent more time figuring out how to make the hole even slightly better for myself than you, a stranger, have.

not only is it far better to suggest ways to make bathing/brushing teeth/eating/etc. more accessible, but you know what? sometimes you don't need to comment on people's executive dysfunction. sometimes its okay not to appoint yourself the savior of every disabled person. you can just let us vent & be the experts on our experiences, unless we ask for advice.

rebellum

Like its not that people are like "meh, I can go another day without showering"

It's begging and pleading and threatening yourself to just GET UP and SHOWER

It's standing there naked in front of the shower for 10 minutes because you're inexplicably* terrified and unable to just get into the water

(*it's not inexplicable! It's executive dysfunction! It still feels like there's No Cause though, even when you know it's executive dysfunction)

It's your brain and body screaming at you when you try to brush your teeth, feeling like you're turning into a hurricane of static and stinging bees, until you give up and just swish some water and toothpaste around in your mouth because at least that's something.

Like it's literally a disability.

Depending on the task, it falls under either ADL or IADL. ADL stands for "activities of daily living" and refers to things like bathing, feeding oneself, and and going to the toilet. IADL stands for "instrumental activities of daily living", and refers to more complex activities like cooking, cleaning, and shopping.

Not bathing can fall under either of those, depending on the person. For me it was that I knew how to bathe, I could bathe myself, but due to executive dysfunction from mental illness I often couldn't get myself to change my clothes, or had to wipe myself down with a wet soapy cloth. So I count myself as struggling with IADL.

Other people struggle with basic activities like they literally cannot ever bathe themselves, they require assistance to bathe and someone to feed them food. ADLs are associated more with physical disabilities and intellectual disabilities.

So basically, yeah we aren't skipping basic hygiene, people are literally disabled and struggle with doing basic tasks.

Reminding people of what will happen only causes more distress.

LAPD detonated 5000 lbs of fireworks in the middle of a residential area, injuring at least 17 people and causing $900 million in various damages in a low-income, majority-POC neighborhood.

They then continue to pursue caging the person whose fireworks they stole while news media misreports to cover for police incompetency and destruction.

for a while there i was sympathetic to tumblr because of how much they’re in debt; i was kind of like “well of course they’re absolutely desperate for new users, they literally need the money or else tumblr goes down forever”. and then suddenly today it hit me that there’s actually no fucking reason for that debt to be causing these ui changes? the userbase has been INCREDIBLY clear about what they want from tumblr over the years, not to mention clear about the fact that even twitter people don’t need this place to look like twitter. it actually would be very… EASY? for them to just make changes in a direction people would actually be HAPPY with?

for fuck’s sake there were people trying to organize a “crab day” for tumblr despite tumblr doing nothing but telling us to go fuck ourselves for months on end. there were people spending hundreds of dollars on check marks just for the glee of MAKING FUN of twitter. can you IMAGINE how much money this userbase would donate to tumblr if they actually made ui updates geared toward what people have been asking for?

if tumblr actually crowdsourced ideas or even just LISTENED to their userbase it may have been possible for them to make way more money than they’re begging for now, they just insist on trying to drive their actual demographic and loyal userbase out for literally no reason

fantasticsublimepeanut

They are doing surveys that are really hard to find because their survey blog has reblogs disabled for some reason.

listeningboy

OP, you’ve forgotten the fact that their current user base isn’t giving them money. The lack of money is causing the changes because they’re not getting out of debt by catering to us right now. Which is the whole point of the crab day, FYI, to show them that we can be profitable if they stop fucking up our website.

Right Americans, I need an explanation. What on Earth are these kids doing wrong? Surely this is normal?

image
maximumsunshine

You're meant to open a tab. The bartender keeps your card, and everything you order gets added to your tab. Then, before you leave, your tab is closed, your card is charged for everything at once, and you get your card back.

ayeforscotland

That seems like a useful way for bars to take advantage of folk who are absolutely plastered.

It just seems much easier to tap your card on a machine than wait for some big tally at the end of the night.

gardensandghosts

What machine? The bartender/waitress usually has to go to a POS machine and close out manually. Plus how are they supposed to tally tips properly? Stiffing the waitstaff and causing more work is rude!

ayeforscotland

The card reader, and yeah go to the POS machine, enter the drinks and make them tap a card? Doesn’t seem totally outlandish.

People can pay with cash tips or they take a percentage of the transaction?

Or even better bars can pay their staff properly?

I’m not against tipping but it shouldn’t make up the majority of someone’s wages.

ilikesallydonovan

Hang on, in the US you hand your card over??? That seems like a recipe for fraud. Like, if my card was copied and used for a fraudulent transaction then my bank wouldn't compensate me if I had handed my card over to a stranger to hold on to.

magess

It is. The US credit industry just expects a certain level of fraud. Sometimes they will reimburse you, sometimes not. The banks built a leaky bucket and adjust their profit projections accordingly.

jv

The way the US banking system has evolved in a totally different way than most of the rest of the world (cheques instead of money wires, credit cards instead of debit cards, all the different technology things) is a unsolved mystery to me. I've tried to find out an explanation googling around a bunch of times and no one seems to even talk about it.

madridthekidd

I’ve left my card at the bar before and gone back to get it the next day and still no fraud. 🤷🏻‍♀️

jv

wait wait

image

It's not like that in any way. Service workers are as honest as everyone else, and by default I consider the average USian a couple of points above of your average spaniard (or any of our southern european siblings, you know what I'm talking about, portu-italo-greek-balkan-turks) in any honesty scale.

But it's... odd. As someone else says in the notes, it's like handling the waiter your wallet full of cash so they can take it away and take whatever money they need from there. Or telling me that in your town people don't use keys on their house front doors and all it's fine. I'm sure it's ok, but when you come from a place where you lock your door every night before going to sleep, it feels crazy.

Like, some years ago there were some cases here where people installed card readers over the actual card slot of ATMs, with a small camera pointing to the numeric keyboard, so they could clone your card. Banks are always reminding you to not let anyone see your PIN number, and, generally speaking, be ultra careful with your cards.

So handling them to someone you don't know so they take it away from you to pay without you really being in front of them and manually confirming with your secret passcode ... it's pretty mindblowing

passiveagreeable

The first time my dad was presented with a card reader at the table in Europe, he was a bit aghast. He didn’t like the idea that they could see him confirming everything and easily watch whether he tips or not. He has since gotten used to it the more my parents visited me, but it’s just a difference of understanding.

For us, it’s normal to hand off your card because unless you are actually involved in the fraud or were immensely irresponsible, you won’t be liable for the charges. And having not handed off my card for a long time, thinking about it now even makes me a bit nervous. But obviously, there is nothing a person can do about it unless you demand to follow the waitstaff to their computer and watch everything happen. It is slowly, slowly changing, but I emphasize: slow.

There is a certain level of trust you have to have in your server, and they also know that if there is theft of someone’s card or card info, they may be investigated first. But I don’t think at all it’s unreasonable to not want to hand you card to anyone you don’t know, service employee or not, because as soon as it leaves your sight, really your hand even, there’s a potential for trouble. But it’s just another weird thing about the US, and I’m sorry that there isn’t a universal standard of how these things work. Both for myself and everyone else.
